The Bessemer Borough monthly meeting for December had a large focus on improving the fire station, including approval of installing two specialized locks for the station.
The locks, which cost $200 each, will be opened via thumbprint. According to council president Nathan Leslie, the department will pay for the locks. The idea discussed at the meeting was to have the police hold the database of approved thumbprints. The list was not set in stone at the meeting, though the idea of the council president, the firefighters and the head police officer having access to the locks was discussed.
The idea of fixing the ceiling tiles and lights in the fire station was also brought up. Emergency Services Committee head Amy Bylenok brought the idea, citing the age and wear of the inside of the station.
“We’re revitalizing and restructuring the department. We’re trying to move forward. The lights are old and inefficient, so we need to replace those,” Bylenok said.
