A South Greensburg firefighter injured his ankle while battling a blaze at a vacant storage building in Youngwood Tuesday evening.
The fire at the corner of Walnut Street and North First Street was reported around 5:30 p.m., according to Westmoreland County 911.
The unidentified injured firefighter likely has a broken ankle, according to Youngwood Fire Chief Lloyd Crago. He was taken from the scene to a local hospital.
The storage building is made up of two empty railroad cars put together, Crago said. It stands alongside railroad tracks. First responders could not immediately determine who owns the building.
It is uncertain how the fire started. There is no wiring or electrical devices inside, but it is a known hangout for the homeless and others, according to Crago.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire.
