Two people escaped unharmed Wednesday when a fire tore though their home in Pittsburgh’s South Side Flats neighborhood then spread to a second house, officials said. One dog and one cat were found dead inside the residence on Larkins Way where the fire began about 4:45 p.m., Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Alicia George said. No one was inside the second house when the fire broke out, George said. One firefighter was taken to the hospital to be evaluated for heat-related illness, George said. It took less than 30 minutes for firefighters to put out the two-alarm fire, which was under control shortly after 5 p.m., George said. The Salvation Army provided water and shade for first responders and residents. The American Red Cross is helping the displaced residents with temporary housing. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
