Members of the Central Coventry, Hopkins Hill and West Warwick Fire Districts helped evacuate Sunny Villa, an assisted living facility in Coventry, and after a fire in a residents’ room on Monday.
Firefighters said they were dispatched Monday afternoon after a report of a fire in a room at the facility located at 51 Laurel Ave.
A staff member told firefighters that a resident had called for help and they discovered a blue plastic tote container was on fire in the corner of the room.
The quick-thinking staff member removed the resident and put out the fire with a fire extinguisher.
The first Central Coventry engine arrived a few moments later and Capt. Blanding took control of the scene. Moments later, the staff followed their safety plan and all 60 residents were evacuated.
Firefighters said the fire was contained to the corner of the room but smoke spread throughout the entire facility and took time to clear out.
