Public safety officials in Smithfield are asking residents to sign up to receive local alerts through Nixle, according to a press release from the town.
Smithfield’s Police, Fire, and Emergency Management departments have partnered with Nixle, a communication platform, to create a notification system that will inform residents of local emergency situations and relevant community advisories.
“Town safety officials look forward to the implementation of Nixle to keep the citizens of Smithfield better informed of the events in town that may have an effect on their daily lives,” Fire Chief Robert Seltzer said in a statement.
Nixle sends notifications through text, email, voice messages, social media, and its mobile app.
Residents can register by texting their zip code to 888777 from a mobile phone; using the Nixle widget on www.smithfieldfire.com, www.smithfieldpd.com, or www.smithfieldri.com; or by going directly to Nixle’s website, where they can also customize alert settings and create a user profile.
More than 7,200 agencies around the country use Nixle for community engagement and emergency communications, according to the press release.
