A fire board election that’s unexpectedly running without rules this year – including no requirement to file election spending reports – is prompting the board’s chairman, Bruce Lemois, to strongly question the fairness of Cumberland’s entire election process.
If fire board candidates don’t have to file campaign finance reports, he’s saying, what’s to stop them from collecting funds that benefit not only their run for the fire board but also the second office they’re seeking.
The two-for-one scenerio has Tom Kane, chairman of the Democratic Town Committee, also crying foul.
Suggests Kane,”The lack of oversight is frightening and disturbing. The condition under which the fire board has been allowed to operate in the election process is a flat out embarrassment. To ask the voters of Cumberland to elect candidates who have not filed a campaign finance report declaring all donations and expenses should not be tolerated or accepted.”
