The measure banning the chemicals in some children’s products now goes to Governor Malloy’s desk to be signed into law.
Advocates of the bill cited research that the chemicals used to stop different children’s products and some household furniture from being flammable are hazardous. The chemicals can be found in nursing pillows, changing pads, nap mats, and upholstered furniture, among many others.
Researchers have found the chemicals are hormone disruptors, which are linked to cancer and other developmental delays. However, these chemicals become even more toxic when exposed to fire and they create extra smoke, which can be deadly. This is especially true for firefighters, who are exposed to the burning products when putting out fires.
Earlier this month, members of the General Assembly’s Children’s Committee joined environmental groups and firefighters in rallying at the state capital in support of the bill.
