Sen. Ryan Pearson, who in 2013 wrote the legislation that governs the town’s unified fire district, said this week he’s looking ahead to the work of transitioning the independent fire district into a municipal department.
“At the end of the day,” he said, “that has always been the goal: one district, one chief, one tax bill.”
Pearson suggested work on the municipal plan could begin with the January legislative year, but the target date would likely be the 2018 election cycle because an amendment to the town’s charter will be needed, along with taxpayers’ support for a new municipal department.
