Two historic houses on Second Street in Newport were damaged late Tuesday night by a fire that started in the rear section of 18 Second St.
A fire started at about 11:15 p.m. at 18 Second St., and soon involved 20 Second St., which stands close by it, according to Newport Fire Department Captain Michael Eyre.
No residents were injured, but a pet dog at 18 Second St., died in in the blaze. One firefighter was also treated for heat exhaustion, Eyre said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The occupants of 18 Second St. are staying with relatives, while the residents at 20 Second St. have been assisted by the Red Cross, according to Eyre.
