Six families are temporarily without a home after a fire broke out at their multi-family residence on Bloomingdale Avenue Tuesday night, a fire official said. The fire was reported around 10:30 p.m. at 22 Bloomingdale Ave., Pawtucket Fire Lt. Will Maher said. The three-story multi-family home had tenants in the first- and third-floor apartments while the second floor was vacant. The home sustained smoke damage throughout and while most of the fire was contained to the basement, the property was deemed uninhabitable because water got into the electrical system in the basement, Maher said. The first-floor occupants dialed 911 after smelling smoke and were able to self-evacuate, while firefighters assisted the third-floor tenants out of the building. The origin of the fire was deemed to be the basement and the cause has been determined to be due to a mechanical failure.
