Local firefighters saw the need and decided to lend a hand to another “helper” group in the city.
Members of the Pawtucket Firefighters Local 1261 said they read an Oct. 5 story in The Valley Breeze on the dire situation at the Blackstone Valley Emergency Food Center, where volunteers had taken in just $100 in donations during the month of September as they faced $3,000 in monthly expenses.
John Wallace, secretary/treasurer of the local union, told The Breeze that members unanimously decided to make a $600 case donation, as well as to organize a canned food drive to help the center, which serves Blackstone Valley residents in emergency financial situations.
Thirty or more boxes of canned goods were collected at all city fire stations and delivered last Friday, Nov. 17, to grateful volunteers at the shelter.
“We will be there for you in any way we can,” said union members in a post.
