Brian Dugan, who grew up in the Fifth Ward neighborhood as one of 11 children of Roberta and the late Peter Dugan, was appointed Thursday to serve as the fire chief of the Newport Fire Department.
“It’s fantastic — this is something I always hoped for, but never knew if I would get there,” Dugan, 53, said shortly after receiving the news from City Manager Joseph J. Nicholson Jr.
“There are a lot of very talented people in the department and I’m very glad and grateful I’ve made it to the chief’s position,” he said. “I’m hoping I can do the city proud. I want to make a difference.”
Nicholson worked with an interview panel of officials to select the top candidates and then conducted the final interviews.
