South Berwick Fire Chief George Gorman died over the weekend after a four-year battle with cancer. He was 75. We, and the community who knew him best, are in awe of his leadership and service. The chief was beloved by his firefighters and the people of South Berwick. He was with the town’s fire department for 53 years, including 47 as chief. How many of us can say that we had the same job for 53 years and spent most of that time in the top leadership position? That in itself is amazing, not to mention the level of excellence he demanded and received from his crew. Gorman represents the best attributes of his generation. By all accounts, he was a man of the highest character, who stood up for his department and could always be counted on in tough situations.
