Five adults came ashore with injuries Sunday after a large wave swept them all from the jetty that forms the Harbor of Refuge in Narragansett, authorities said.
Narragansett firefighters, arriving at a section of the rocky ocean barrier closest to Point Judith, near Cronin’s Campground, around 2:40 p.m. rescued three people who were still in the water.
A total of five people had been standing on the jetty, about 20 to 30 feet away from shore, when an ocean wave thrashed the rocks and pushed them into the harbor, said Narragansett fire Capt. Peter Taylor.
Two were able to swim to shore. Four in the group were taken by ambulance to South County Hospital, Taylor said. The fifth person took himself to the hospital for a minor injury, he added.
Taylor said he hopes people “take heed” in the coming days and stay off the rocks during heavy surf conditions.
