A smoky fire in the lower level of the former Woonsocket Trust Co. Bank at 117 Main St. drew a quick response from city firefighters Tuesday evening. The department was alerted by a box alarm and located the small fire in a rear section of the bank building that is part of the former Main Street water power trench. Firefighters put out the fire that was found to be burning in some accumulated debris in the stone and concrete area that is apparently used from time to time by homeless people. Firefighters and police found signs of habitation and litter under a concrete outflow area of trench next to the back of the building, as well as in the open doorway on the lower level leading into the trench area under the building.
