Crews are trying to determine the cause of a fire at an industrial facility on Phenix Avenue. The fire began around 8 p.m. at the PJ Keating plant, which is a quarry and asphalt plant. Assistant Chief Bernard Patenaude said a machine called a "wash tower" caught fire. He said the machine is used to wash debris off of stones. Patenaude said 35 firefighters responded to the scene and laid down 4,500 feet of hose to reach it from the nearest hydrant. He said firefighters had to fight the flames from tower ladders because the wash tower is a 4-story machine. "We weren't sure how much the metal structure was compromised by the fire," Patenaude said. Despite the challenges, Patenaude said the fire was extinguished quickly.
