The West Avenue Fire Station 1, shut down last year due to numerous complaints about mold and its impact on the health of firefighters, remains closed with no prospects of a reopening.
“The West Avenue Fire Station is currently indefinitely closed,” said Wilder Arboleda, spokesman for Mayor Donald Grebien this week. The city has estimated that to address the issues at the fire station and get it up to code, it would likely cost more than $1.5 million, he said.
Station 1 is now targeted to be absorbed into a planned new public safety complex, said Arboleda. The city is currently requesting bids from companies interested in planning and designing that new facility.
“Bids are currently being reviewed as the city looks for a firm that will ultimately help with the design of the complex ...” said Arboleda. Those bids are expected by Oct. 11 at the latest, he said.
No location or budget has been determined yet for a potential public safety complex, according to officials.
