First responders had to extract one motorist involved in a four-vehicle accident Thursday morning on West Main Road that seriously injured three people. Portsmouth police said a 24-year-old man was driving northbound on West Main near Hedly Street when he lost control of his Dodge Durango and swerved into oncoming traffic. The SUV collided head-on with another vehicle around 7:40 a.m. Thursday, according to a statement from Portsmouth police. “This set off a chain of events in which the Dodge Durango also struck two other vehicles in the northbound lane which sustained minor damage,” the statement said. Portsmouth firefighters extricated the 24-year-old. Three people were taken to local hospitals with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The road was closed for about an hour. Middletown firefighters assisted with the response.
