The Greenwood fire chief said a child playing with a lighter sparked a fire at an apartment complex that forced ten people out of their homes.
Chief Terry Strange said the fire broke out at the New Haven Apartments on New Market Street around 9 p.m.
Strange said firefighters were able to contain the fire and smoke damage to one apartment but two neighboring units suffered smoke damage.
Five people from the burned apartment and a total of five people from the two neighboring units were displaced.
The Red Cross is providing financial assistance for food, clothing, temporary lodging, and other essentials to the victims. The relief agency said they were called to assist a total of 18 fire victims on Thursday from the Greenwood fire and another single-family house fire in Anderson County. Initially, the Red Cross reported that they were assisting nine children and nine adults from both fires, and that the victims of the Anderson fire were two adults.
