Firefighters battle fire at downtown Columbia building, officials say

The fire that broke out in a condemned building in downtown Columbia Thursday evening is now under control, according to the Columbia Fire Department. The fire happened at the Babcock Building of the old state hospital off Calhoun Street, according to the department. Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins says the fire began just before 6 p.m. Thursday. Jenkins also says the fire was on the fourth floor of the building. Calhoun Street and Pickens Street were also closed to traffic due to the fire.
