The Glassy Mountain fire chief said two people were able to safely escape their burning home after a smoke detector alerted them early Tuesday morning. Chief Robert Staples said a young man and woman lived at the home on Goodwin Road near Travelers Rest and that both made it out of the home without injury before firefighters arrived. Staples said firefighters had some difficulty getting a fire hydrant opened because water in the stem had likely frozen. After about 8 or 10 minutes, crews were able to crack open the hydrant and water began flowing though the hoses. The home is a total loss. An investigation is underway to determine what caused the fire.
