Cleanup efforts are underway in Spartanburg County after Tropical Storm Michael’s record-setting rainfall Thursday caused minor flooding in local streams and roadways. A new daily rainfall record was set Thursday at the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, with 4.28 inches of rainfall recorded. That eclipses the old record of 2.47 inches of rainfall recorded on Oct. 11, 1897, according to the National Weather Service. The storm caused power outages, toppled over trees and power lines, created hazardous driving conditions and caused localized flooding across Spartanburg County. Duke Energy reported thousands of power outages across Spartanburg County. Early Thursday, there were nearly 9,000 customers without power. The number Duke Energy customers without power had decreased to about 3,500 by Thursday night. Nearly 3,300 customers were without power in nearby Polk County, N.C.
