The Chattanooga Fire Department (CFD) say a woman is dead, her husband hospitalized and a firefighter burned in a fire Thursday evening. CFD responded to a house fire on 1220 Durham Drive in Chattanooga at 6:30 p.m. CFD spokesman Bruce Garner says neighbors were the first to spot the fire. Joe Birchfield ran over and banged on windows while his wife called 9-1-1, said Garner. Birchfield says he went around to the back of the house where he found an elderly man trying to put out the fire with a garden hose. Two Chattanooga Police officers arrived on scene and broke a window trying to get to the elderly man's wife inside, but the flames were too intense. On Friday morning, Chattanooga Fire Department spokesman Bruce Garner says the lead fire investigator says the cause of the fire appears to be accidental, but investigators still aren't sure what exactly caused the deadly fire.
