It's a problem most volunteer fire departments know all too well, being understaffed and overworked. "I have actually cut people out of cars by myself and I have put out fires by myself," says Cisco Fire Chief Walter Fairbanks. According to Fairbanks, many of the volunteers have full time jobs, delaying their response times. "Sometimes, you have no man power other than the person that's on duty," says Fairbanks. It may take only ten minutes for volunteers to get the fire station before they can take off for the scene, but it's precious time when it comes to saving a life. Working towards a better response time has prompted Fire Chief Fairbanks to request additional paid personnel on the volunteer staff so they can better respond to life-threatening situations, like the one that happened to a homeowner in Clyde Last week a fire ripped through a home that destroyed everything inside. "There ain't nothing worse.. much worse that can make me feel worse than losing my home," says Jimmy Scott, the man who lost his home in the fire. It's situations, just like Scott's that drive volunteer firefighters to work hard despite not getting paid. "We run a lot of medical calls, we check all of the medical equipment off, or radios," says Fairbanks. Fairbanks says many of the volunteers also come during the weekends to clean the fire trucks and make sure they are working properly.
