Pecos City leaders met with Reeves County Commissioners Monday evening to hammer out a plan to help out the city's Volunteer Fire Department. Breakdowns and old age left the fire department with one working truck and four disabled vehicles recently. The newest vehicle is 10 years old and half of the fleet dates back to the 80s. With only one working truck, the department cannot cover the county for fear that another fire may break out in the city, according to Fire Chief Freddy Contreras. Hotels and other tall buildings present a real problem for the department as they are ill equipped to deal with multi-story fires, which is why Contreras says they are in desperate need of a ladder truck as well. The city and county will be holding another meeting in the coming weeks to determine a plan for the fire department and will discuss the possibilities of building a new fire station elsewhere.
