A fire smoldering in a silo at a farm supply company in Texarkana, Texas, has been extinguished. Workers spent Tuesday night removing damaged feed from the silo one truck at a time, checking it for sparks and relocating it. Meantime, firefighters monitored the situation overnight and applied water as necessary to keep down the dust, which is combustible. Three fire trucks, a battalion chief and 12 firefighters were rotated out Tuesday afternoon and into the night to maintain staffing levels. Firefighters reached and finally were able to extinguish the part of the feed that was smoldering between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. Wednesday, Assistant Fire Chief Chris Black said. The silo at Miller-Bowie Supply in the 1000 block of West 3rd Street contained about 100,000 tons of corn-based cattle pellet feed. Workers continue to offload it this morning as firefighters pack up their gear, Black said. The exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined; but it most likely was due to spontaneous combustion, Fire Chief Eric Schlotter has said. People in the area could smell the feed burning but it posed no hazard to the public, authorities said.
