Early Friday morning, firefighters put out a garage fire that burned a home in South Austin.
The fire happened at the corner of Wolftrap Drive and Rocky Ford Drive just before 3 a.m. That’s near the intersection of West Slaughter Lane and Brodie Lane.
Austin Fire Department spokeswoman, Vanessa Schaefer, says the family inside was alerted by their daughter who woke up and smelled smoke.
Crews were able to stop the fire out from spreading next door. The fire was put out by 3:30 a.m.
The Austin Fire Department says the family inside the burned house made it out safely. They are currently staying with neighbors and will sleep at a hotel tonight.
The total estimated damage for the family’s contents is $175,000 and $200,000 for structural damage, which was mostly contained to the garage.
Officials are still working to find out the cause of the fire.
