A child is in stable condition after being rescued from a fire that destroyed a Mid-County home, according to information from the Groves Fire Department. The child was rescued from the back bedroom of the house in the 3200 block of Allison Avenue after flames broke out around 10:15 p.m., the department said. The fire is believed to have started in the garage, according to Dale Jackson, Groves Fire Chief. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, he said. About 20 seconds after the child was rescued, the roof started collapsing, Jackson said, adding that firefighters "went beyond the call of duty to get that kid out." The child was sent to a Galveston hospital where Captain Pete Konidis said he is expected to make a full recovery.
