Most families at a Northwest Side apartment complex are back in their homes after a fire sent them out into the rain early Wednesday.
Police and firefighters went around banging on doors at the Melia Apartment Homes around 4:30 a.m. to make sure everyone evacuated.
They had received calls, initially, about smoke inside one apartment, then about a fire burning through a ceiling.
When they arrived, firefighters instead found fire inside a wall of a downstairs unit.
Before they could extinguish it, the fire spread to the apartment upstairs.
They did, however, keep the fire from traveling beyond the two units.
The entire building was evacuated as a precaution.
After some time, everyone except those in the affected apartments were allowed to return home.
There were no injuries reported.
