PHOTO: While the fire burning near Beaver Mountain Ski area is not quite as large as reported Tuesday evening, it is moving into additional areas as it burns through timber, leading to a formal closure of several areas near the fire. The order, signed Wednesday afternoon, prohibits all pedestrian, equestrian, bicycle and motorized vehicle use of the Forest Service area, land, trails and roads. These closures include areas east to Swan Creek and north of U.S. 89 between the Peterson Hollow drainage and the east forest border. They remain in effect for Peterson Hollow, Highline, and Beaver Creek and Sink Hollow (on the Utah side). Franklin Basin Road remains open. In addition, the Utah Department of Transportation advises all users of U.S. 89 in Logan Canyon that stopping, parking or standing on that roadway is indefinitely prohibited between Franklin Basin Road and the canyon summit. These restrictions were requested by the U.S. Forest Service and the Utah Highway Patrol and comes as a result of the many people who have been stopping to watch the fire, creating a hazard on the highway. According to the U.S. Forest Service, the fire was estimated Tuesday evening to have burned 1,500 acres, but when the much more accurate infrared readings came in later, they discovered the total was 920 acres.
