As the last tolls of a bell echoed outside Lehi Fire Department Station 81 early Tuesday morning, Fire Chief Jeremy Craft readied his bagpipes to play an arrangement of “Amazing Grace.” Nearly three dozen community members and Lehi firefighters listened solemnly as they gathered at the station in remembrance of those who died 17 years ago in terrorist attacks on September 11. The service included a moment of silence followed by the station bell being rung 17 times, once for each year since the attack, and in honor of fallen Utah firefighter Matthew Burchett, who passed away this year fighting the California wildfires. “Ringing of the bell is very significant in the fire service,” Craft explained. In the past, firefighters used bells to warn others about fires, he said.
