VIDEO: Last year, Mindy Graham's relationship ended violently. "[My boyfriend] literally pulled me out of the bed and proceeded to push me around,” she said. A few hours later, her boyfriend lit their home on fire in an apparent suicide attempt. The man spent a day receiving psychiatric help and was then released — a free man. Two months later, Graham says she struggled to get answers from police and prosecutors about when, or even if, arson charges would be coming for her ex. That’s important because, in the state of Utah, financial assistance is available to victims who have suffered financial loss, physical injuries and emotional trauma as a result of a violent crime. But without criminal charges, that assistance is off-limits.
