One person was taken to the hospital for possible smoke inhalation and two people were displaced after a Hampton apartment caught on fire Thursday afternoon, an official said. Hampton firefighters responded to the Cambridge Apartments complex in the 5100 block of Goldsboro Drive just after 3:45 p.m. Battalion Chief Jeff Pereira said at the scene. First responding crews saw smoke in the air as they drove to the scene and saw heavy smoke at the apartment's door, he said. Flames heavily damaged the one unit, and an adjacent unit was damaged by smoke. Firefighters had to cut into the walls and roof to see if the fire had spread, he said. The fire wall prevented the fire from spreading along the roof line, Pereira said. Adjacent units were vented with fans to remove smoke and toxins that had drifted in, he said. Officials believe the fire was discovered by the residents who had returned to their home. One of them went inside the unit, but got out on his or her own. That person was taken to the hospital, but his or her condition was not available at the scene.
