Onley officials voted 4-1 in June to give part of a state grant that typically goes to the town's volunteer fire company to a fire company in the neighboring town of Tasley.
"In the past, we have always given it to the Onley fire department," said Councilman Matt Hart, who cast the only vote against splitting the annual state aid to localities money between the two fire departments.
Hart is concerned the reduction in funding may be detrimental to the town's volunteer firefighters.
Councilman Ned Finney made the motion to split the funding. He could not immediately be reached for comment.
Mayor Jack Pierson said he expects the fire company funding issue to be discussed again at the council's July 6 meeting, although at least part of that discussion likely will be in executive session with the town attorney. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m.
The Onley Fire Department has found itself in the limelight more than once recently.
Onley Fire Rescue volunteer firefighters, including Brandon Travis Haynes, 20, and juveniles were charged with arson in May in connection with several fires last winter.
