One person was injured and at least 14 people evacuated from their apartments in north Stafford Thursday after a fire broke out in a basement unit, according to Stafford Fire and Rescue spokesperson Mark Doyle.
Firefighters were called to the Stafford Mews apartment complex at 8:26 a.m.
When they arrived, smoke blanketing the stairwell in between the apartment units caused several residents to be stranded on their balconies.
Others, including three people from the basement apartment where the fire originated, had already evacuated through windows and stood outside the complex by the time firefighters arrived.
Firefighters had the blaze under control within 20 minutes, Doyle said.
