A fire broke out early Sunday morning in Roanoke. The fire happened at the corner of Franklin Road and Reserve Avenue in an old Roanoke City Schools maintenance building. Firefighters were still putting out the fire until 11 a.m.
Firefighters got the call around 2 a.m. and they say flames were already shooting through the roof when they arrived. They tried to enter through the front door, but the fire was too far along to attack from inside the building.
"Once they got in they realized it was too extensive heavy fire involved throughout the building. they had a roof collapse. So we pulled out , been defensive ever since. Fire has spread throughout the building, have multiple collapses throughout the building. It's unsafe for us to enter so now we're trying to cool down the hot spots," Chief David Hoback of the Roanoke Fire EMS Department said.
