West Point Fire Department and West Point Police Department were dispatched after a live Vietnam-era grenade was found in a building along the 700 block of Main Street in West Point. Police received a call around 10:58 a.m. Monday from the West Point Historical Society saying they found the grenade, said Andy Aigner, King William County fire chief. The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation bomb unit arrived at the scene around 12:45 p.m. Shortly after 1:30 p.m., state police put the grenade in a trailer designed to safely hold an explosive and transported it out of town. Authorities evacuated buildings on both sides of Main Street between 7th and 8th streets and all the way back to Kirby Street. Those roads were reopened once the explosive was removed.
