Newport News Fire Department Battalion Chief A. D. Hanline and Lt. Andre Dorsey said they sort of fell into their firefighting careers. Dorsey, not too long after high school, got tired of construction work and applied for the department on a whim. Hanline applied shortly after college at the end of a grant-funded position in a research lab. Both said they only planned to work for the department temporarily, until something else came along.
