Someone trying to rob a Dollar General store Wednesday night was scared off by firefighters' radios inside the store, police said. The incident happened about 9 p.m. at the store at 1711 Effingham Street in Portsmouth, police spokeswoman Det. Misty Holley said in a news release. The armed suspect walked into the store and demanded the clerk give him money from the register. As the clerk was attempting to comply, several public safety radios, carried by Portsmouth Firefighters inside the store, were alerted and drew the suspect’s attention, she said.
