The number of volunteer fire and rescue workers in Caroline County has declined over the past few years, from 236 in 2014 to 192 in 2016. “We need volunteers to staff two engines, four ambulances and one duty chief position 24 hours a day,” Caroline fire and EMS Chief Jason Loftus told the Board of Supervisors at its meeting last week. “That equals 54,282 hours a year. In fiscal year 2016, volunteers only staffed 25,376 hours.”
