Five people are safe after being rescued from the Shenandoah River on Thursday night. Emergency responders were originally dispatched to the river in the area of the 4300 block of Captain Yancy Road to assist two people stranded in the water and hanging in the trees. Crews used a boat to rescue one person who was safely brought back to land. When attempting to rescue the other stranded person, McGaheysville Fire Chief Todd Breeden said the boat became tangled among trees in the water.
