A candle left burning unattended caused a fire that destroyed a Southeast Community home in Newport News overnight Friday, an official said. Firefighters responded to the blaze in the 700 block of 30th street about midnight, according to Battalion Chief David Lewis. First responding crews saw heavy flames coming from the first floor of the home with fire extending to the front porch and second floor, he said. The person who reported the fire told dispatchers he or she thought someone was living in the home.
