Thirty-eight Norfolk Southern Railroad cars derailed on Saturday evening in Wise County, Virginia, according to a company spokesman on Sunday.
The 2,800-foot-long, 7,000-ton coal train, consisting of three locomotives derailed at 8:40 p.m. on Saturday, on a rail line just west of Andover, Virginia, in Wise County.
Of the 54 cars on the train, 38 derailed, company spokesman Jonathan Glass said as of 9: 15 a.m. on Sunday.
Four rail cars overturned into Pigeon Creek, spilling an estimated 400 tons of coal into the creek, Glass said.
