Six months after he became Botetourt County’s new Fire & EMS chief, Matthew Britt has resigned. Britt informed county officials on Monday that he planned to leave his job effective Dec. 1, which was described in a news release Tuesday as “a mutual agreement between the County and Chief Britt.” The news release did not state a reason for the departure; efforts to reach Britt on his office and cellphones were unsuccessful. The resignation was a setback for county officials, who spent nearly a year looking for a new emergency services head after the Fire & EMS Department was rocked by the unexpected death of former Chief Jeff Beckner in June 2016.
