Hampton Division of Fire & Rescue’s Chief David E. Layman is retiring, an official said.
Layman’s retirement will be effective on Dec. 1, according to spokesman Battalion Chief Anthony Chittum.
Deputy Chief Jason Monk will step in as interim chief, according to Chittum.
Officials have not yet announced details about how they will permanently fill the role, but historically they have conducted a national search, Chittum said.
Layman was sworn in as Hampton’s fire chief on July 11, 2011, according to the department’s website.
