An ad hoc committee will be formed to create an updated draft of Pittsylvania County’s first public safety ordinance, aiming to complete it before the end of January.
First drafted in the fall of 2017, aspects of the proposed public safety ordinance became a point of contention between the county administration and the fire and rescue association a week before it was set to be reviewed by the board of supervisors last October.
Pittsylvania County Administrator David Smitherman said the ordinance has been on hold since then. In the fire and rescue committee meeting last week, the committee stated the ad hoc committee will comprise of seven members — three Pittsylvania County Fire and Rescue Association members, two people who serve on the board of directors of a fire and rescue agency, county public safety coordinator Chris Slemp and supervisor Ron Scearce, the fire and rescue committee chairman.
