Petersburg Fire Chief Dennis Rubin is stepping down, city officials confirmed Monday morning.
Rubin's last day is Aug. 24.
"Chief Rubin has significantly enhanced the fire department during his time in Petersburg," said City Manager Aretha R. Ferrell-Benavides. “While we are sad to see him go, we are 100 percent understanding of his decision to be closer to his family."
The city says in a news release that instead of announcing an interim chief, the city manager has proposed appointing Police Chief Kenneth Miller as the managing director for public safety.
In this role, Miller will manage police, fire and community corrections.
"Both police and fire will have strong deputies to carry out the day-to-day operations of each department," the city said in a news release.
The city says the move will provide "substantial cost savings."
