Crews extinguished a large fire that engulfed a tractor-trailer at a truck stop off Interstate 81 in Montgomery County Wednesday afternoon. Crews from the Elliston Fire Department, Shawsville Rescue Squad and Fort Lewis station in Roanoke County responded to the fire about 4:10 p.m. at the Lancers Truck Stop at exit 128 on North Fork Road near Elliston, said Lt. Mark Hollandsworth with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. There were no hazardous materials on board, the driver told firefighters. There was a diesel spill because of the fire, which was handled by a containment system set up by the firefighters. The fire was far enough off the interstate that it did not affect traffic.
