Sometimes, the rescuers need some rescuing – of the academic kind.
Year after year, Norfolk Fire-Rescue Academy recruits need to refresh their math skills. And Centura College has math instructors.
It’s a marriage too long in the making.
In the fall of 2016 at Scope Arena for a back-to-school event, Jeffrey Wise, the Norfolk Fire Chief, met Joel English, vice president of operations at Centura College.
“Wise and I began talking about challenges with educating adult learners with his Fire-Rescue Academy,” English recalled.
Wise, English and others worked over the next eight months, planning the curriculum at no cost to the city of Norfolk.
