A fire caused $175,000 worth of damage and destroyed a barn in Page County early Sunday morning, according to Stanley Fire Chief Terry Pettit. The structure — located at the 3000 block of Mill Creek Crossroads — was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. The Virginia Department of Forestry brought a bulldozer to plow a fire line to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby fields.
The barn contained nearly 1,000 round bales of hay, according to Pettit.
The cause of the fire was believed to be a spontaneous combustion in the hay.
Pettit said the barn was insured.
